Strengthened customs controls and cooperation on product compliance are necessary to better protect EU citizens and businesses

The report shows that while customs controls continue to play a crucial role, better cooperation between customs and market surveillance authorities is key to preventing non-compliant or dangerous products from entering the EU internal market. Digitalisation also plays a key role in taking customs controls to the next level. The Commission has already helped to digitalise communication between customs and market surveillance authorities, and the customs reform currently being negotiated between the Council and the European Parliament will significantly contribute to improving customs controls and risk management.
