After years of cooperation between the Commission and the industry, the number of charging ports for mobile phones has been reduced from 30 to 3. The Commission is now proposing legislation to establish a universal charger for all relevant equipment. It will also separate the sale of chargers from the sale of electronic equipment. The new proposal for an amended Radio Equipment Directive will make USB-C the standard connector for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld video game consoles.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age, said: “European consumers have long been frustrated by incompatible chargers in their drawers. We gave industry ample time to come up with their own solutions, but now is the time to take legislative action for a universal charger. This will greatly benefit our consumers and the environment, and is in line with our green and digital ambitions.”
