Do you know the rules for free volume?

If your company handles dangerous goods in excess of the permitted quantity, the company must appoint an examiner. Security Advisor, which must be registered with Emergency Management Agency.

The free quantity is determined based on a point sum calculation based on each individual product that is dangerous goods and may differ.
The quantity limit is set out in subsection 1.1.3.6 of the ADR Convention and is popularly called the "free quantity".
Please note that only general cargo can be transported as free cargo. Tank transport must be carried out in accordance with the full set of regulations.

Should Mediator help you – for example, with the dangerousness of the goods?

Mediator can help your company clarify whether the free quantity is exceeded in your daily handling of dangerous goods. Mediator can act as your external Safety Advisor who also advises you on best practice solutions in the daily handling of dangerous goods.

Employees in the company who are involved in handling dangerous goods, within unloading, packaging, labeling, the dangerousness of the goods, preparation of dangerous goods documents and driving under free volumen, must, in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 1.3 of the ADR Convention (road transport) or the IMDG Code, undergo training that corresponds to the above areas.

What is the definition of dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods is a general term for substances and objects that can cause damage to people, the environment or property if not handled correctly during transport. Dangerous goods can be many things – for example:

  • Lithium batteries
  • Oil – diesel and heating oil
  • Petrol
  • Paint – not water-based
  • Turpentine
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Dry ice
  • ammunition
  • Gas cylinders.
