Should we help you with UFI codes?

From 01.01.25, products with a danger symbol on the label must be UFI-registered.
Should Mediator help you?

UFI codes – what are they?

UFI codes are identification numbers used on products containing hazardous mixtures. These codes are part of the EU Regulation on the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Chemicals and are designed to help identify and track hazardous products on the market.
If someone is injured by using a hazardous product, healthcare professionals need to know what substances the product contains. Therefore, all hazardous products UFI must be registered in a common database – ECHA's PCN portal.

UFI codes are generated and the products are registered via ECHA's PCN portal. Relevant authorities receive the information. In Denmark it is The poison line, who receives the information.

UFI – what does it stand for?

  • U-Unique
  • F – Formula
  • I – Identifier.

UFI stands for “unique formula identifier”. The UFI code consists of 16 characters, which are a combination of letters and numbers. The UFI code must appear on the product labels. The code is divided into four blocks.
It is relatively simple to extract the UFI codes, but it requires specialist knowledge to get your UFI codes registered. Mediator can help with this. The UFI codes only have value if they are registered with ECHA.

How to create a UFI code for hazardous mixtures?

To create a UFI code, you must first have an ECHA user, which is free for companies to create. You must have a CVR number and a prescription number for each product. It is important that each product has its own CVR and prescription number, which ensures that each UFI code is unique. You must assign the prescription number to your products yourself.

When creating a UFI code, it is also important that you are aware of whether the code already exists. The UFI generator does not warn you about existing reports.

When do I need a new UFI code for chemical mixtures?

There are very specific rules for when you need to make a new UFI registration for your product. This applies, for example, if changes are made to the product's recipe - even if this is due to changes in raw materials (MIM).
It is important that healthcare professionals know the contents of your product, even if there are the slightest changes.

Who must register with ECHA?

The UFI is registered in the ECHA Submission Portal in accordance with Article 45 and Annex VIII of the CLP Regulation. The following must be registered in ECHA:

  • Manufacturers must register in all countries where the goods are sold
  • Distributors must register if they resell goods to other countries or change names
  • Manufacturers can register for distributors

Remember that all products that are classified or hazard labeled must be UFI registered. However, there are exceptions if the product is a pure substance or if the product is only labeled with GHS01, GHS04, GHS09.

You should also be aware that there may be local language requirements. If you are in doubt about the local requirements for your UFI registration, you can always contact us at Mediator.

Should Mediator help with UFI codes?

Do you need advice on UFI registration? Mediator can help you in several ways if you need guidance on creating UFI codes. If you want to do your UFI registrations yourself, we also hold courses in preparing UFI codes, so that you can be well prepared to create the codes in the future.

By 2025, all companies with products containing chemical mixtures classified as hazardous to health must, for example, be labeled with a UFI of labels

The process of creating a UFI code is relatively simple, but it is important to follow the guidelines carefully to ensure that the code is correct and meets all requirements. And if you prefer us to create the codes for you, we can easily do that. We can arrange for you to create an ECHA user and then register your UFI codes. If you already have an ECHA user, we will need access to your account.
Then we need a safety data sheet for the product, and we need to know which countries the product is marketed and sold in – that is, which markets the product is active in. There may be different language requirements in different countries.
We also need to know what the product contains – i.e. the full recipe of the product. It should be noted that several countries require payment for UFI registration.

Mediator also holds a course on creating UFI codes – UFI course
