Safety data sheets are required for all classified substances and labelled products sold to industry. In addition, a safety data sheet may be required for unlabelled products. If you are in doubt, please contact contact us.

Help with preparing a safety data sheet

What should you pay attention to when preparing safety data sheets?

The REACH regulation sets the framework for which chemical substances and products must have a safety data sheet. This concerns chemical substances and products that:

  • Meets the criteria for classification as hazardous chemicals according to the rules set by the Ministry of Environment and Energy on classification or CLP-regulations persistent (degrades slowly in nature), bioaccumulative (accumulates in living organisms) and toxic or very persistent and very bioaccumulative according to the criteria in Annex XIII of the REACH Regulation
  • Is included in the candidate list prepared by ECHA (Annex XIV of REACH-regulation).
  • Contains 1% of a substance hazardous to health or the environment (for gaseous substances 0,2%)
  • Contains 0,1% of a persistent, bioaccumulative or toxic substance or a very persistent and very bioaccumulative substance, or if it is listed in Annex 14 of REACH

In 2015, it was decided that safety data sheets should also be prepared for materials containing ≥ 0,1% allergenic substances, or ≥ 0,1% Carc3 substances or substances classified as repro-tox in a concentration ≥ 0,1%.

In addition, there is a national requirement for 16-point safety data sheets for substances that have a Danish limit value:

  • Substances and materials that are included with a limit value in The Occupational Safety and Health Administration Executive order on limit values for air pollution by substances and materials.
  • Materials that contain 1% or more (for gaseous materials 0,2%) of a substance listed with a limit value in the Danish Working Environment Authority's executive order on limit values for air pollution with substances and materials.

Important points when preparing a safety data sheet

A safety data sheet is made up of 16 items, which together provide information about the health and environmental significance of the substance or product.

A safety data sheet must be in the national language, clearly worded and concise.
If there are non-Danish-speaking employees in the workplace, the employer must ensure that the safety data sheets are translated and communicated to these employees.
As mentioned, Mediator helps you with both the preparation of a safety data sheet and/or the translation of a safety data sheet.
