What is an eco-label?
The EU Flower, the Swan or Vegan? What should you choose?
When you choose to have your product eco-labelled with the EU Flower or the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, it is a guarantee for the consumer that the product meets environmental requirements and takes health into account. The environmental impact is assessed at each stage from cradle to grave. All raw materials in the product are included in the overall assessment.
Mediator advises various industries on applying for eco-labels in Denmark, the Nordic countries and the EU.
What brands are available?
- Swan – With the Swan you show that your product is among the least environmentally harmful within its category.
- The flower – is the European eco-label used throughout Europe.
- Blue Wreath – is Asthma-Allergy Denmark's allergy brand.
- Vegan – primary eco-label for cosmetics and hygiene products as well as food.
- Allergy Certified – is a worldwide brand.
How do you obtain an eco-label?
To obtain an eco-label, the products must be reviewed for all ingredients – i.e. a 100% recipe or recipe. Often a certification of the production site or similar. When companies can apply an eco-label, they generally show that they take social and environmental responsibility. Labeling of products can therefore be seen as an expression of the companies' CSR efforts.
With an eco-label, you also think about the type of packaging and waste – can it be recycled and or minimized?
An eco-label is a competitive parameter for more and more Danish companies. It is our experience that many Danish companies consciously work with sustainability and an active CSR policy. The companies want to act ethically and politically responsible in relation to their products and demonstrate responsibility towards people and the environment.
There are several different labels. When it comes to eco-labeling in Denmark, the labels you typically encounter on Danish products are the Swan, the Flower, The Vegan, Den Blå Krans and AllergyCertified.
The Swan and the Flower are Denmark's official eco-labels. The Swan is also a Nordic eco-label and is used in the Nordic countries, where the Flower is a European eco-label. The environmental criteria for both the Swan and the Flower are based on relevant environmental conditions associated with the entire life cycle of the product.
