CLP

What is CLP?

Back in 2008, the EU introduced the GHS system - however, you can still see the old orange hazard symbols on some products.

GHS is the current guidelines for the classification, labeling and packaging of chemicals. The GHS system is to ensure that the rules are the same throughout the world.

In the EU, GHS has been implemented via the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008).

We are happy to help with validation, calculation, advice and courses on understanding and using CLP for classification and labeling of your products.

What does CLP stand for?

CLP stands for:

  • Classification
  • Labelling
  • Packaging.

CLP refers to the rules for how chemicals must be classified, labelled and packaged in the EU. CLP replaces the old rules in the Substances and Preparations Directives (Directive 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC). In addition, new CLP hazard symbols have also been introduced, replacing the previous hazard symbols from the Substances and Preparations Directives. If there are orange hazard symbols on the products, they are obsolete.

Overall, it is the European Chemicals Agency (THROW) which determines how CLP is to be used in the classification and labelling of chemicals. The rules are enforced in Denmark by The Environmental Protection Agency.
