Commission adopts new proposals to stop deforestation, develop sustainable waste management and create healthy soil for people, nature and climate
The proposals include:
- Guarantee that products purchased, used and consumed on the EU market do not contribute to global deforestation and forest degradation
- Stricter rules for waste exports, a more efficient system for transferring waste as a resource and a targeted effort against illegal waste trade.
- Exports of waste to countries outside the OECD will be limited and only permitted if third countries are willing to receive certain types of waste and are able to manage it sustainably.
- The strategy sets out a framework with concrete actions for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of soil and proposes a number of voluntary and legally binding measures.
- The strategy aims to increase the carbon content of agricultural soils, combat desertification, restore degraded lands and soils, and ensure that all of the Earth's ecosystems are healthy by 2050.
